This watercolor captures a weathered motel sign in Cave City, Kentucky, where the promise of “Special WiFi Rate” feels both nostalgic and oddly contemporary. I was drawn to the layered typography, faded surfaces, and improvised practicality of the sign—a roadside attempt to stay current while carrying the wear of decades of travelers passing through.
In this piece, I explore the quiet character of roadside America, where aging motels adapt to changing times without losing their identity. The sign becomes a portrait of transition: part vintage relic, part modern convenience, and a reminder that even the smallest details can tell the story of a place and the people moving through it.
