Vacancy
Vacancy
This watercolor centers on a weathered motel sign in Cave City, Kentucky, where the word “Vacancy” stands boldly against fading color and worn surfaces. I was drawn to the quiet symbolism of the sign—an invitation, a pause, a place between destinations. Cropped closely, the composition turns familiar roadside language into something both graphic and reflective.
In this piece, I explore the nostalgia of roadside America and the beauty found in aging details. The worn neon and peeling surfaces speak to years of travelers passing through, while “Vacancy” becomes more than an announcement—it suggests possibility, travel, and the stories carried from one stop to the next.
