This watercolor captures a weathered motel sign in Cave City, Kentucky, where peeling paint, glowing “Vacancy,” and faded patriotic imagery speak to the optimism of roadside travel. I was drawn to the layers of promise, nostalgia, and time etched into its surface. I like how the chipping paint is distorting the sign that once said "The Seal of Excellence for the Traveler" as well as the two American flags. Only the word "Vacancy" in neon letters has stood the test of time on this sign.
