Best of Friends

Best of Friends captures one of those fleeting, ordinary moments of childhood that becomes more meaningful with time. Two young boys sit together, completely absorbed in one another’s company, laughing over a book. Their expressions hold the uninhibited joy of childhood—a friendship built in a moment when something as simple as sharing a story can become the funniest and most important thing in the world.

Surrounding them is an abundance of pattern, color, and texture. Floral curtains, polka dots, stripes, quilts, upholstery, clothing, and wood grain compete for attention, creating a visual energy that reflects the beautiful chaos of motherhood and raising boys. The patterns have a distinctly feminine quality, representing a mother's presence within the scene without placing myself physically in it. They surround the boys much as a mother does—providing comfort, warmth, and structure while their lives unfold within the space.

Watercolor allows these different surfaces to shift between carefully observed detail and expressive marks. Some areas are controlled and deliberate, while others are allowed to remain loose and unpredictable, echoing the experience of parenthood itself. There is a constant negotiation between order and disorder, planning and spontaneity, holding on and allowing things to happen.

At its heart, Best of Friends is about noticing the moments hidden within the noise of everyday family life. The toys, laundry, patterns, books, blankets, and clutter may feel chaotic while living among them, but woven through that chaos are small moments of connection worth preserving. This painting is my attempt to hold onto one of them: two boys, a book, and a shared laugh that might otherwise have disappeared into an ordinary day.
