Bell Charm Clock

Bell Charm Clock

Warsaw, Indiana

This watercolor captures a tiny cuckoo clock charm from the popular bell charm jewelry of the 1980s, a little piece of my childhood that brings back so many memories. Growing up, collecting and trading these colorful plastic charms was something all the kids were doing, and I loved the excitement of finding new ones to add to my collection. The cuckoo clock was always one of my favorites, with its whimsical details and miniature design, so I knew I had to paint it. I wanted to bring that same playful energy into the background by creating an optical illusion. Up close, the repeating pattern appears simple and still, but as you step away, the shapes begin to shift, warp, and create a sense of movement. I love how this unexpected visual effect adds another layer of fun to such a nostalgic subject. Through this painting, I wanted to celebrate the little treasures we collected as kids, the joy of trading with friends, and how something so small can hold such big memories.
