A Storm on the Horizon
A Storm on the Horizon
This watercolor captures the quiet tension of a summer storm rolling across the open farmland of rural Indiana. A modest barn and cluster of grain bins sit beneath an immense sky, dwarfed by towering clouds that seem to stretch endlessly across the landscape. I was drawn to the dramatic contrast between the warm golden tones of the soybean field and the cool blues, grays, and purples of the approaching storm. Through layered washes, granulating pigments, and delicate textures, I wanted to capture the movement and unpredictability of the clouds against the stillness of the land below. There is something both beautiful and unsettling about watching a storm approach across the flat Midwestern countryside, where the horizon stretches for miles and the sky becomes the main character. This painting reflects the familiar rhythm of life in rural Indiana—a place where the land and weather are deeply connected, and where even an ordinary field can become extraordinary in the moments before the rain.
